Checklist

Questions to Ask Before You Commit to Studying Abroad

A checklist to work through before you pay a deposit, sign with an advisor, or accept an offer — grouped by the same seven factors as our country comparison tool.

Updated 2026-09-20

Studying abroad is a big commitment of money, time, and immigration status — and the people you'll talk to (universities, agents, consultants) don't always have the same interests as you. Use these questions to put to yourself, to the university, and to any study abroad advisor or consultant, so you can compare their answers on equal terms.

The sections follow the seven priorities in the Country Comparison Tool, so what you learn here maps straight onto the weights you set there. Each question shows who can answer it: you, the university, an advisor or consultant, or an official government source. Tick questions off as you go — ticks aren't saved, so print or screenshot the page if you want a record.

Academic Fit

Program strength, faculty, research access, and accreditation in your specific field.

Cost & Affordability

Tuition, cost of living, exchange rate exposure, and realistic scholarship access.

Language & Culture

How steep the adjustment is — language, classroom norms, and daily social life.

Career Outcomes

Internship access, employer recognition, and post-study work visa pathways.

Questions for a study abroad advisor or consultant

Advisors and consultants can genuinely help with applications and paperwork, but their incentives aren't always yours. Ask these before you pay or sign anything — an advisor who answers plainly is a good sign.

Turn your answers into a ranking

Once you know what matters most to you, set your priority weights in the Country Comparison Tool and let it rank your shortlist. If you're borrowing, the loan risk simulator shows what each realistic outcome does to your repayments.
